Last stages of the Tour of Switzerland and the start of visits to the host sites of Lausanne 2020 (09.12-14.12)

On September 17th, the Lausanne 2020 Olympic flame was lit during a traditional ignition ceremony in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. The flame returned to Switzerland, where it embarked on a tour stopping in each of the 26 cantons of the country before returning to Lausanne for a tradition torch relay in the Olympic Capital, in the lead up to the Opening Ceremony of the Games on January 9th, 2020.

Less than a month till the start of the Games, and the Journey of the Flame is drawing to a close. So don't miss the last stops or it will be too late!

The Tour of Switzerland finished last week with two stops, in Glaris and Chur. Then the Flame visited one of the venues for Lausanne 2020, St Moritz, which will welcome athletes in its Olympic Village for competitions in Bobsleigh, Luge, Speed Skating, and Skeleton.

Some first-class athletes were present for the lighting of the Lausanne 2020 Flame at Glaris: Vreni Schneider, Alpine Skiing and double gold medallist at the Calgary OG in 1988 (gold, silver and bronze at the Lillehammer OG 1994), Nils Rhyner, Freestyle Skiing, and potentially qualified for the YOG Lausanne 2020, and Jan Hauser, Curling, bronze medallist at the OG of Vancouver 2010.

The last stop in the Journey of the Lausanne 2020 Olympic Flame was at Chur, in Canton Grisons. The Olympians Marco Büchel (Alpine Skiing, Liechtenstein, OG Albertville 1992, Lillehammer 1994, Nagano 1998, Salt Lake City 2002, Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010) and Elias Ambühl (Freestyle Skiing, OG Sotchi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018) celebrated this great moment, surrounded by our mascot Yodli and numerous school children.

St Moritz had the honour of being the first host site to welcome the Lausanne 2020 Flame. On this occasion, Sandro Viletta, Alpine Skiing gold medallist at the OG of Sotchi in 2014, carried the Flame before a crowd of admirers.

At the Women's World Cup FIS (International Skiing Federation), a second ceremony was held for the lighting of the Olympic Torch, starring Robin Cuche (Alpine Skiing, Paralympic Games, Sotchi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018) and Christoph Kunz (Alpine Skiing, Paralympic Games, PyeongChang 2018).

The Journey of the Flame will continue on the 27th of December in Champéry (Centre-ville, 16:00-18:00), the 28th December in Les Diablerets (Maison des Congrès, 15:30-17:30) and the 29th December in Leysin (Maison du sport vaudois, 16:00-18:00).
