From now until January 2020, school libraries in the Canton of Vaud will get a taste of the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympics. In association with the Vaud education department, the Lausanne cantonal library and the Olympic museum, they will be offering a host of fun learning experiences themed around Lausanne 2020.
Children from Year 1 to Year 6 (4 – 9 years old) will be able to familiarise themselves with the different winter Olympic sports. The programme will include a ski-jump puzzle, a video and quiz on bobsleighing, introductions to the different forms of skating, and a series of activities based around a book on skiing and snowboarding. The sessions will stimulate the imagination of those taking part and create enthusiasm for the games.
Pupils from Year 7 to Year 9 (10 – 13 years old) will be split into groups representing the 5 continents, and then take part in a series of challenges including: researching information about the Youth Olympics, skill games, finding their way around the different areas of the library with the help of tablets and QR codes, solving puzzles, and drawing competitions. A range of digital supports will be used in a fun and educational way throughout these mini-Olympics taking place in the Vaud school libraries.
